Photographic studio in Alexandria (Egypt) operating during the period 1860-1872. Its Austrian owners (Alex Schier and Otto Schoefft) were the official photographers of the regent (khedive) Tewfik. In 1872 the business was ceded over to Cesare Bernieri, who was in possession of Schier’s negatives and was based at the same location as Schier & Schoefft. The latter collaborated with Carlo Naya and continued to work in Cairo.
Stefanos Scilizzi (1867-1886) was born in Alexandria (Egypt). He was the son of Zannis Scilizzi, a tradesman from Chios (Greece), and of Marietta Frangopoulou. He was C. P. Cavafy’s close friend and classmate at the “Hermes” Pragmatic Lyceum. Their correspondence is partially preserved in the Cavafy archive. He died at a young age.
Alec (Alexandros) Skoufis (1886-1932) was born in Alexandria (Egypt) and was the son of a wealthy family. His parents were Ioannis Skoufos and Elisabeth Abet. He studied music, initially in Alexandria and then in Europe. He was a professional tenor, while for some time he worked at the Athens Conservatory as an instructor. He published collections of poems and novels in French. He was murdered in Paris (France).
Pascal Sebah was born in Istanbul (Turkey), in 1823. His father was from Syria, and his mother from Armenia. He opened his photographic studio in Istanbul in 1857, and a second one in Cairo (Egypt) in 1873. He died in 1886. The name Sebah & Khachik refers to a photographic studio in Alexandria (after Pascal Sebah’s death, his son Jean probably took over the business and opened a branch in Alexandria, working with Khachik).
Pascal Sebah was a known photographer. He was born in 1823 in Istanbul (Turkey). His father was a catholic from Syria and his mother was Armenian. In 1857 he opened his personal studio in Istanbul, followed by another one in Cairo (Egypt) in 1873. He participated in many international photographic exhibitions. He died in 1886 and his business was taken over by his brother and his son, in collaboration with other photographers.
Ο Αλέκος (Αλέξανδρος) Σεγκόπουλος, γιος του Δημητρίου και της Μαρίας, γεννήθηκε στον Βόλο το 1898 και εγκαταστάθηκε, μαζί με τη μητέρα και τα τρία μικρότερα αδέλφια του, στην Αλεξάνδρεια το 1907. Απόφοιτος της Σαλβαγείου Εμπορικής Σχολής, εργάστηκε σε ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις της Αιγύπτου καθώς και ως χρηματιστής. Το 1926 παντρεύτηκε τη Ρίκα Αγαλλιανού (Σεγκοπούλου) και έζησαν στο ίδιο κτήριο με τον Καβάφη. Κατέστη γενικός κληρονόμος του ποιητή. Πέθανε στην Αθήνα το 1966.
Η Ρίκα (Ροδόπη) Αγαλλιανού (μετέπειτα Σεγκοπούλου και Καραγιάννη) σπούδασε νομικά και εργάστηκε σε δικηγορικό γραφείο στην Αλεξάνδρεια. Διηύθυνε, μαζί με τον Α. Γ. Συμεωνίδη, το περιοδικό Αλεξανδρινή Τέχνη, ενώ υπήρξε επίσης συντάκτρια της εφημερίδας Ταχυδρόμος και μέλος του Γραφείου Τύπου του Ελληνικού Προξενείου στην Αλεξάνδρεια. Έγραψε ποιήματα και δοκίμια. Το 1935 εξέδωσε πρώτη, στην Αλεξάνδρεια, τα 154 «αναγνωρισμένα» ποιήματα του Καβάφη. Παντρεύτηκε, σε πρώτο γάμο, τον Αλέκο Σεγκόπουλο και έζησε πολύ κοντά στον Καβάφη κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία της ζωής του. Πέθανε στην Αθήνα το 1956.
Angelos Sikelianos was born on the island of Leucas (Lefkada, Greece) in 1884. He settled in Athens in 1900 and started publishing his poems two years later. In 1907 he married Eva Palmer, with whose support and full-hearted participation he organised the Delphic Festivals (1927, 1930). Sikelianos was also a prose writer and a composer of tragedies. He died in Athens in 1951.
Rica (Rodopi) Agallianou studied Law and worked at a law firm in Alexandria (Egypt). She directed (together with A. G. Symeonidis) the journalAlexandrini Techni; she was also a columnist for the newspaper Tachydromos and a member of the Press Office of the Greek Consulate in Alexandria. She wrote poems and essays. She was the first to publish Cavafy’s 154 “canon” poems in Alexandria in 1935. Her first marriage was to Alekos Singopoulo and she was very close to Cavafy during the last decade of his life. She died in Athens (Greece) in 1956.
Alekos (Alexandros) Singopoulo, son of Dimitrios and Maria, was born at Chalkida (Greece) on February 2 1898, older of four brothers. He and Cavafy first met in Alexandria in 1917. He was a graduate of the Salvageios School of Commerce and worked for Greek companies in Egypt as well as a broker. He married Rica Agallianou (Singopoulo) in 1926 and lived in the same building with Cavafy, eventually becoming his general heir. He died in Athens (Greece) in 1966.
