Richard MacGilivray Dawkins (1871-1955) was a British archaeologist and a linguist. He studied comparative literature at Cambridge and served as Director of the British School of Athens (1906-1914). He conducted important excavations in various locations (in Crete, Melos and Sparta - Greece) and became professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language at Oxford (1920-1939). He lived in Greece for 16 years and travelled throughout the then Greek state as well as across the Aegean, in Asia Minor, the Black Sea and Cappadocia, studying and recording the dialects and local cultures and publishing relevant studies.

Bearing Jewish ancestry, Rae Dalven was born in Preveza (Epirus, Greece) in 1904 and moved with her family to the United States in 1909. She taught Modern Greek literature at the New York University. She translated the work of Greek poets, including that of Cavafy, into English. Her research also included the study of the history of Jews in Greece. She died in New York in 1992.

Couton, Claudius

Claudius Couton was born in 1837. He was a French photographer who started his career at Vichy (France) in 1863. He later opened photo shops in Nice and in Clermont-Ferrand (France). He took part in photographic exhibitions in France.

The Greek Consulate in Alexandria (Egypt) was founded in 1833 and its first consul was Michael Tositsas. Two years later, it was upgraded to a General Consulate. During the period 1876-1949, a consular court had also been in operation, based on the regime of capitulations.
