Woolf, Leonard S.

Leonard Sidney Woolf (1880-1969) was born in London (England). A man of letters, a publisher and a journalist, he founded in 1917, together with his wife, Virginia Woolf, the Hogarth Press publishing house. The couple was among the founders of the Bloomsbury Group. He studied at Cambridge and worked overseas (Sri Lanka, then Ceylon) as a public servant (1905-1911). He published books on political theory as well as his autobiography.

Xenopoulos, Grigorios

Grigorios Xenopoulos (1867-1951) was raised in Zakynthos (Greece) yet studied and lived in Athens. He wrote novels, short stories and numerous plays (comedies and dramas) as well as children’s literature and literary criticism. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal Diaplasis ton Paidon (1896-1948), and the founder and director of the review Nea Estia (1927-1934). He was elected in the Academy of Athens in 1932. He took part in the Greek Resistance as a member of the EAM (the National Liberation Front). He was a friend and admirer of Cavafy and the person who introduced the poet to the Greek audience through an article published in the Panathinaia in 1903.

Emmanouil (Manolis) Zalichi was the son of Cavafy’s aunt Romylia Zalichi (née Xanthopoulou), who was a cousin of the poet’s mother. Zalichi worked for Ralli Bros at the Calcutta branch in India.

Marika Zalichi was a relative (second cousin) of Cavafy, from Istanbul (Turkey). Her mother, Romilia (née Xanthopoulou), was a daughter of the sister of Cavafy’s maternal grandmother (Smaragda Xanthopoulou, née Moschou).

Eftychia Zelita (-1977), née Boiou, was the wife of Stefanos Pargas (Nikos Zelitas), whom she was married in 1916 in Alexandria (Egypt). She had an active role in her husband’s activities, initially with the Grammata and then with the Panegyptia journals. She was involved in the intellectual circles of Alexandria and of C. P. Cavafy.
