Andriomenos, Nikolaos

Nikolaos Andriomenos (1850/1-1929) was one of the most important early photographers in Turkey. He was first employed at a very young age (11) by the photographic studio of the Abdullah Frères (in the area of Pera [Beyoğlu], Istanbul, Turkey); six years later, he bought the building and established his own studio. He won a prize at the Paris Fair of 1903 and taught photography to the then successor to the Ottoman throne. His studio was subsequently taken over by his son Athanasios; it was totally destroyed in 1955, during the “September events” (or “Istanbul pogrom”).

Anastasiadis, Pericles A.

Pericles A. Anastasiadis (1870-1950) was born in Alexandria (Egypt). He was the son of Aristeidis P. Anastasiadis, member of the Stock Exchange in Alexandria, and most probably his professional successor. Pericles Anastasiadis studied abroad and was an amateur painter. He was a friend of C. P. Cavafy and part of their correspondence is preserved in the Cavafy archive.

Georgios Anastasiadis was a member of the “Anastasiadis brothers” commercial company. For many years he served as president of the “Aeschylus - Arion” Association of Alexandria (Egypt), contributing to its further development.

The Alexandria Sporting Club was established in 1890 and is one of the oldest clubs in Egypt and the whole of Africa. Known for its colonial architecture, it also boasts one of the oldest golf courts in Egypt. It was nationalised by the Egyptian government in 1952.

Alban, Aram

Aram Alban (real name: Arnaoudyan) was an Armenian photographer. He was born in Istanbul (Turkey) in 1883 and died in Cairo (Egypt) in 1961. In 1895, he moved to Alexandria (Egypt) with his family. He opened his first studio in 1910, before moving to Brussels (Belgium) in the 1920s and then to Paris (France). He was established as an art photographer and was known for his talent and personal style as well as for his influence on the history of photography in the Middle East. He was the mentor of many younger Armenian photographers. He returned to Egypt in 1940.

O αρμενικής καταγωγής φωτογράφος Aram Alban (πραγματικό όνομα Arnaoudyan) γεννήθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη το 1883 και πέθανε στο Κάιρο το 1961. Το 1895 εγκαταστάθηκε με την οικογένειά του στην Αλεξάνδρεια. Το 1910 άνοιξε εκεί το πρώτο του φωτογραφείο. Τη δεκαετία του 1920 μετακινήθηκε στις Βρυξέλλες και στη συνέχεια στο Παρίσι. Καθιερώθηκε ως καλλιτέχνης φωτογράφος με αναγνωρισμένο ταλέντο και ιδιαίτερο, προσωπικό ύφος. Άφησε το στίγμα του στην ιστορία της φωτογραφίας στη Μέση Ανατολή και υπήρξε ο μέντορας πολλών κατοπινών ομοεθνών του φωτογράφων. Επέστρεψε στην Αίγυπτο το 1940.

Pen name of Evangelos Ioannou. Tellos Agras (1899-1944) studied Law at the University of Athens. He wrote poems and essays and was also a translator and literary critic. He received awards twice for his literary work and published in various literary journals. In 1921, he delivered a lecture on Cavafy’s poetry.
