The three Armenian brothers Viçen, Hovsep and Kevork established the “Abdullah Frères” photographic studio in Istanbul, which operated from 1858 to 1899 with branches in Izmir and Cairo. In 1862, the three brothers became the official photographers of the Sultan’s Court. In this context, they were asked to photograph the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century. Their business was sold to Sebah & Jollier in 1899.
In 1933 Antonis Agkastiniotis published in the newspaper Proini of Nicosia (Cyprus) an article on Cavafy (“Mia xechoristi fysiognomia. C. P. Cavafy, o Anthropos kai o poiitis filosofos”, 13, 14, 16 May 1933).
Pen name of Evangelos Ioannou. Tellos Agras (1899-1944) studied Law at the University of Athens. He wrote poems and essays and was also a translator and literary critic. He received awards twice for his literary work and published in various literary journals. In 1921, he delivered a lecture on Cavafy’s poetry.
O αρμενικής καταγωγής φωτογράφος Aram Alban (πραγματικό όνομα Arnaoudyan) γεννήθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη το 1883 και πέθανε στο Κάιρο το 1961. Το 1895 εγκαταστάθηκε με την οικογένειά του στην Αλεξάνδρεια. Το 1910 άνοιξε εκεί το πρώτο του φωτογραφείο. Τη δεκαετία του 1920 μετακινήθηκε στις Βρυξέλλες και στη συνέχεια στο Παρίσι. Καθιερώθηκε ως καλλιτέχνης φωτογράφος με αναγνωρισμένο ταλέντο και ιδιαίτερο, προσωπικό ύφος. Άφησε το στίγμα του στην ιστορία της φωτογραφίας στη Μέση Ανατολή και υπήρξε ο μέντορας πολλών κατοπινών ομοεθνών του φωτογράφων. Επέστρεψε στην Αίγυπτο το 1940.
Aram Alban (real name: Arnaoudyan) was an Armenian photographer. He was born in Istanbul (Turkey) in 1883 and died in Cairo (Egypt) in 1961. In 1895, he moved to Alexandria (Egypt) with his family. He opened his first studio in 1910, before moving to Brussels (Belgium) in the 1920s and then to Paris (France). He was established as an art photographer and was known for his talent and personal style as well as for his influence on the history of photography in the Middle East. He was the mentor of many younger Armenian photographers. He returned to Egypt in 1940.
The Alexandria Association of Greek Scientists "Ptolemy I" was established in 1908, with its main aim being to operate a room for scientific meetings and events. It is in possession of a community room and a library.
The Alexandria Sporting Club was established in 1890 and is one of the oldest clubs in Egypt and the whole of Africa. Known for its colonial architecture, it also boasts one of the oldest golf courts in Egypt. It was nationalised by the Egyptian government in 1952.
