          Archivist's note

The appreciation of Toynbee of Cavafy's poems is interesting for three reasons: a) he categorises Cavafy's poems into historical and erotic (dual identity of Alexandria, according to Toynbee); b) he refers to the notion of dramatic monologue; c) he praises the "beauty of sound" of the poem "The City".
