Biographical history

Nestor Schaffers (1826-1896) was a painter (landscapist) and a photographer. He studied painting in Antwerp (Belgium) and Düsseldorf (Germany). He settled in Ghent (Belgium) in 1862, running his own photographic studio.

Photograph of Leon Verhaeghe de Naeyer, husband of the poet's aunt, Sévastie Photiadés, in an official ambassadorial uniform with medals. He is holding a hat in his right hand and a gloves in his left. The logo of the photo shop in the lower part of the recto as well as on the verso.
