Scope and content
Printed four-page pamphlet with the poem “Walls” [“Teichi” in Greek] and its English translation (“My Walls”) by the poet’s brother, John Cavafy. The first page, functioning as a cover, bears the title of the poem and the poet’s name, a quotation from Aeschylus, as well as the place (“Alexandria”) and date indication (“1 September 1896”), framed by two typographic ornaments. The second page presents the poem in Greek, signed with the initials “C.C.”, while the third page contains the English translation in a corresponding layout, marked with the indication “Translation” and the initials “J.C.C.” The fourth page reproduces the format of the first one in English translation, with a different chronological reference and the date rendered in Latin numerals (1897).
